Andrea Ascani

Andrea is Associate Professor of Applied Economics at the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI), L'Aquila, Italy. He received his PhD in Economic Geography in 2016 from the London School of Economics, where he is currently affiliated as Visiting Fellow of the Department of Geography and Environment. Before joining GSSI, Andrea served as Assistant Professor of Economic Geography in the Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning of Utrecht University.


His research interests lie at the intersection of applied microeconomics, economic geography and international business studies. Andrea has written several articles on multinational corporations focusing on their locational and organizational strategies, their impact on the innovativeness of local companies and their contribution to the structural transformation of regional economies. His research has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Economic Geography, Research Policy, Cambridge Journal of Economics, Economic Geography and Journal of World Business.


For his work on the heterogeneous effects of foreign direct investment on recipient economies, Andrea has received the Copenhagen Business School prize for the Best Paper written by a young scholar in International Business at the European International Business Academy (EIBA) Conference 2017. In 2018 Andrea was awarded a Veni grant by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) to study the implications of Chinese investments in European regions.
He has also participated in several research project as research officer, including EU FP7 and EU JPI.
